Diversity of Plant Species in The Steel City of Odisha, India: Ethnobotany and Implications for Conservation of Urban Bio-Resources BABT
Kumar,Sanjeet; Das,Gitishree; Shin,Han-Seung; Kumar,Pradeep; Patra,Jayanta Kumar.
ABSTRACT The vegetation of the Steel City (Rourkela) of Odisha, India has high ethnobotanical values by virtue of its rich floral diversity. People in the urban area are highly dependent on the plants available in and around the city for their primary needs. The present study highlights the use of local flora, explore, identification, ethnobotany and conservation of wild and cultivated plant species in the city of Rourkela, Odisha, India. It also pays heed to the proper utilization of urban flora as a way of highlighting its ethnopharmacological importance. A field survey was conducted to collect information about floral diversity in and around the city. Data on the use of plants was collected with a semi-structured questionnaire and from the peer-reviewed...

Evaluation of Medicinal Values of Gymnopetalum chinense (Lour.) Merr., a Lesser Known Cucurbit from Eastern Ghats of India BABT
Kumar,Sanjeet; Das,Gitishree; Shin,Han-Seung; Kumar,Pradeep; Patra,Jayanta Kumar.
ABSTRACT >The in vitro antimicrobial activity of Gymnopetulum chinense (Cucurbitaceae), a lesser known climber of Eastern Ghats and recently recorded species from Odisha, India was studied against five selected human pathogenic bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, S. pyogenes, Vibrio cholerae, Shigella flexneri and Salmonella typhi), by agar well diffusion (AWD), disc diffusion (DD) and broth dilution methods. Different solvent extracts were prepared from the leaves of G. chinense using various solvents viz. n-hexane, chloroform, methanol, acetone and aqueous. The nomenclature, detailed description and photographs of the plant are provided to facilitate its easy identification. The leaf extract showed presence of phenolic compounds, tannin, saponin,...

Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry Analysis and Antibacterial Activity of Bluish-Green Pigment from Pseudomonas sp. JJTBVK (KF836502) BABT
Verma,Bala; Kumar,Pradeep; karthik,Loganathan; Dhanasekaran,Dharumadurai; Babalola,Olubukola Oluranti; Banakar,Shivakumar Pulakeshappa.
The present study was conducted for the isolation of potential bacteria from the desert soil, their molecular identification and prediction of restriction sites of the potential isolate using the bioinformatics tools. Production of the metabolites was done by inoculating in nutrient broth of pH 8.6. Metabolite was bluish-green in color; it was extracted and dried by using methanol and used for partial characterization by using GC-MS spectroscopy. Antibacterial activity was performed with the clinical human pathogenic isolates. The bacterium was identified as Pseudomonas sp.JJTBVK on the basis of 16S rRNA sequencing. The sequence was analyzed for the restriction cleavage sites, which showed that the sequence had various restriction sites for different...

Identification and characterization of Fusarium mangiferae as pathogen of mango malformation in India BABT
Kumar,Pradeep; Kamle,Madhu; Misra,Asok Kumar; O'Donovan,Anthonia; Pagano,Marcela; Modi,Dinesh Raj.
ABSTRACT Fusarium mangiferae (=F. subglutinans) isolates collect from malformed samples from major mango-growing area of North India. Molecular identification and characterization of eleven most virulent isolates of F. mangiferae, based on pathogenicity tests used for the present study. Species-specific, genus specific ITS-PCR and PCR-RFLP performed for the accurate and easy detection of F. mangiferae. The rDNA-ITS 28S region sequences used for phylogenetic analysis of Fusarium isolates from India and other countries for homology search between them. The phylogenetic tree divided the isolates into three clades (i.e., American, Asian and African) and showed the high level of sequence based similarity (69-99%) among all Fusarium sequences from Asia. Thus,...
